Baby Boomers Turning 60

With the first of the baby boomers now turning 60, some are looking forward to retirement, while others are trying to decide what they plan to do when they grow up. Life is truly inexhaustible, even beguiling. Each of us looks at life through windows of our own choosing. Sixty-something is the buzz word as many baby boomers are sixty, fit, and sensational. The practice of personal excellence for superior living is their motto. Fitness gives top priority to good health habits, high self-esteem, and empowerment.

Aging is constant change like waves of the sea. The waves of change can be exciting, magical, and fruitful as we focus on the positive side of change. Age may become a building dance of intrigue and new horizons. Aging during what Dr. Ken Dychtwald calls the "AGE WAVE," is a high-sea adventure. Sixty years on the sea of life buoy us up with experience and strength, so we can welcome - and weather - this next decade. I'm delighted to explore these seas of change together, to anticipate the deep-sea treasures before us. The possibilities of diminishing family responsibilities gives time and energy for discovering and following our bliss, our passion, to reach toward our creative peak. Thoughts of retirement add to the expectation and hope of activities we have always dreamed about doing. Many exciting prospects loom. Are the storms of aging producing sky-high waves from the sea of life, waves that threaten to capsize you?

Such was the case for my friend and mentor, Kathleen Garrett. My petite, charming, high school home economics teacher and I were having lunch at a local restaurant. Looking at her across the table, I knew she had been experiencing health problems. "How are you feeling? I asked. "You look great!" As we ate, she shared her secret with me. "My doctor at Mayo Clinic gave me a unique prescription," she said, her eyes twinkling. I must have looked puzzled, because she continued, "He advised me to enhance the quality of my life by getting out of bed each morning and saying, 'make each day a holiday and each minute a banquet!"

A new day is dawning for the women who are 60 and over. Let your heart be encouraged. When the storms of life hit you - and they will slap the sides of your boat, splashing into your life - never waver, pray for sea legs, and hold onto the captain's wheel.

Jesus is the One who quiets the sea, who bids the storms to hush. Stand firm in Him and His power!

During our golden, graying years we must keep moving from life to life, watching for the sunrise even in the darkest night, waiting for the calm that comes, inevitably, after the storm.

The Reverend Grady Nutt, formerly of television's "Hee-Haw," spoke a few years ago at a banquet in Cullman, Alabama. His topic, "LIVE EVERYDAY LIKE IT WOULD BE YOUR LAST." He both preached and practiced my friend's "Holiday and Banquet advice." Flying home that night his small plane crashed. God took preacher, comedian, Grady Nutt to his heavenly home.

Heaven is the only certainty for our future. Life on this earth is fragile as a flower. The darkness and despair will wilt it. The sunshine of joy will make it bloom. Though the nighttime is dark, the sun rises each morning with healing wings.

Second Chance at Life © & Wear Red Day - GO RED !

A Second Chance At Life © & National Wear Red Day
by Shirley W. Mitchell

Today, February 6, 2009 is National Wear Red Day promoting prevention of heart disease. The simple, powerful way to raise an awareness of heart disease and stroke and support the fight against heart disease in women is to Wear Red Today. I will be Wearing Red Today, why don't you join me. Also a donation to the American Heart Association would be a great help.

July 4th, 2008, my perfect health for 70 years came to a sudden stand still. Thanks to modern medicine and a Heart Pacemaker placed in my chest, I am again a bionic woman with a second chance at life. It took me a few days to get my mind wrapped around the fact that my perfect health I had enjoyed all my life was gone.

I felt like King David in 1 Samuel 30:1-6, King James Version of the Bible. "And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the south and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire:

(2) And had taken the women captives and were therein: they slew not any, either great of small, but carried them away, and went on their way.

(3) So King David and his men cane to the city, and behold it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives.

(4) Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept until they had no more power to weep.

(5) And King David's two wives were taken captives.

(6) And King David was greatly distressed; for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people were grieved, every man for his sons, and for his daughters: BUT KING DAVID ENCOURAGED HIMSELF IN THE LORD HIS GOD.

As David, we will pray to our God and He will hear. Verse 8, "And David enquired at the Lord, shall I pursue after this troop? (Amelekites) Shall I overtake them? And He answered, pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all." And David recovered all! Verse 18, "And David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away; and David rescued his two wives."

So, like King David, I grieved over my sick heart, then I encouraged myself in my God. Being under the umbrella of God's presence I knew my new Heart Pacemaker was gain, not loss. Nothing is lost under the protection of God. As we live the Christian Abundant Life, our recovery from hard times begins on the inside soul as we connect with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Encourage your self in the Lord today and wear RED! Connect with Him for divine guidance. The victory is yours. There is victory in Jesus.

Many people in our world today are hurting! We are in war, economic stress, global warming, natural disasters, failing health, families are falling apart, and addiction plague many lives. In such times as these it is imperative we connect with our creator, the ruler of the universe.

As I charge forward with my new Heart Pacemaker, I have a new zeal for encouraging others to encourage themselves in their God, making their grand finale of life victorious!

Help me to Celebrate National Wear Red Day Today... and support the American Heart Association and the Go Red for Women Program !

"50 Great Things About Women Over 50"
Why Women Over 50 Love Their Age... by Jeanie Lerche Davis

Reviewed by Brunilda Nazario, MD

Jeanie Lerche Davis recently Interviewed "The Golden Egg of Aging™" - Shirley W. Mitchell, in relation to this Article on "Women Over 50"...

What do other women think is the best thing about turning 50? To find out, we asked WebMD readers, as well as a doctor (Christiane Northrup, MD, author of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom); a clinical psychologist (Nancy O’Reilly, PsyD); and a retirement lifestyle specialist (Cynthia Barnett, EdD). We also checked out what prominent authors Shirley W. Mitchell (Fabulous after 50® and Sensational after 60®) and Jane Ganahl (Naked on the Page: The Misadventures of My Unmarried Midlife) had to say about women aging, then sprinkled in a few observations from 60 Minutes' crusty humorist Andy Rooney. Here are Shirley's Tips:

8. You get new hair, new clothes, to match who you want to be. You don't feel old, look old, or act old. -- S. Mitchell
10. A world of opportunities opens up when you turn 50. Today, there are entire web sites, companies, and services devoted to the over-50 demographic. Find your niche in that market. -- S. Mitchell
12. Women over 50 are president, CEO, and the star of their own lives. If you have the attitude that life is precious, that life is grandiose, that you don't want to waste any time, you will make this quality time. -- S. Mitchell
15. You've learned that you can depend on yourself and you are open to new opportunities. You can accept change, tackle life, and move on. -- S. Mitchell
25. You’ve learned to appreciate spontaneous humor, for it gives life a spicy flavor. You laugh a lot, and laugh out loud. You let the child within you play. You don’t have to be “perfect” because no one’s perfect. -- S. Mitchell
47. At 50, you learn the value of being passionate about something -- a lover, a career, your life. Passion is what makes you jump out of bed every morning, makes you love every moment in the day. -- S. Mitchell
49. A woman over 50 knows the value of celebrating life. She's sizzling, not fizzling. She's savvy, not sad. -- S. Mitchell

Jeanie Lerche Davis has been with WebMD since 1999. She researches, reports, and writes daily news stories and health features.

Ms. Davis handled media relations for several museums in Illinois and Virginia before focusing her writing career on health and medicine in 1990. In Houston, she wrote for the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital/Texas Heart Institute. "Women Over 50-Their New Role In Our Society"

Mar. 12, 2007... "Women Over 50 - Their New Role in Our Society" with "El Tiempo", the most important Newspaper in Colombia, South America Tatiana Munévar, Sub editora de Vida de Hoy (Assitant Editor, Writer & Journalist for the Life Style Section) Interviewed Shirley W. Mitchell for the Article - "Women Over 50 - Their New Role in Our Society"...

English Version...

Women who claim 50 and 60 years as a stage for the successful female (El Tiempo, Colombia, 2007-03-27)

This is a generation of women who turned the first 50 pages of his calendar-and some are on the 60 - and that do not conform to the stereotype of those who met half a century of life, and for that reason, it is assumed, in the fall twilight of its existence.

These women do not have time for that. They occupied positions of exercising power, exercised in the gym, attending conventions or enjoying a romantic dinner with your partner.

They are women like Hillary Clinton, who at 60 wants to be president of the EU; diva Amparo Grisales who at age 50 was undressed, the French Segolene Royal, who at 51 wants to send in your country; Madonna who is nearing the 'fifth floor ', the president of Chile, Michele Bachelet, and the actress Helen Mirren, owner of Oscar at the age of 61.

Some highlighted by their physical attractiveness, others by their intellect and other more fortunate, for both, but all examples of what is known in the United States as The New Old or the New Aging. One trend based on the generation of Baby Boomers (1946) that identifies nearly 80 million Americans that have led to radical changes in future generations.

"When I came to 50 (in 1996) the Baby Boomers were looking and acting as if they were 30," says Shirley W. Mitchell, author of Fabulous after 50™ (Fabulous after 50™).

"That led to the 'new age' that makes today's women are more active in what were their mothers or grandmothers," he adds.

According to Mitchell eat properly, exercise and have passion for life, in addition to caring for the body, soul and spirit are the cornerstones of the new age. "

The figures say...
A comprehensive study of signature Dove, called 'The beauty comes with the years', revealed that 91 percent of women between 50 and 64 years believe it is time for society to change its perspective on women and the elderly.

"Women over 50 (87 percent of those surveyed) think they are too young to be called old," says the report, conducted by the gerontólogo and winner of the Pulitzer, Robert N. Butler.

According to the report "Women older than 50 years are poorly represented in the media and culture." Despite this, most are proud of their appearance and 86 percent had no problem in revealing her age. Similarly, 92 percent believe that past generations of women over 50 did the things they are able to do today and that makes them different.

In Colombia, as in the world, life expectancy has increased with the advancement of medicine and technology.

According to the National Department of Statistics, Dane, in the mid-twentieth century, life expectancy was 50 years, but the 90 was raised to 70 years. "That motivates changes and progress in the lifestyle of women," said Dr. John G. Cendales.

In Colombia, however, this trend is individual rather than group. "Aging with dignity is something more personal than collective," says anthropologist Jose Ramirez.

Faced with the theme-adds-there is a double dilemma: on the one hand we hear messages that invite them remain vital despite the years, but on the other hand the state has no policy to help achieve it, so the issue becomes responsibility for everyone.

Despite this, between us and these are examples of 'supermujeres' older than 50 who surely will be the gateway for other prolong their youth and vitality beyond what is expected. "We are many that we are active force, aware of everything and that we are very far from what is called the elderly."
